I grew up dirt dirt poor with no parents. I basically worked my ass off and now have "made it", so yes. I'm new money. In many ways I'm still a dirt poor kid who thought having a $1 bill to buy a bag of chips was a lot of money.
So much that I don't own a car. I've never owned a car. I've always had beaters I paid less than $3k for, and hand-me-downs. Currently I drive a Vespa Scooter. I don't have a GF and I don't really go out. One of the reasons is that I live in a city where driving long distances is required, and doing so on the Scooter is a little stressful at night. (Los Angeles)
I'm 26 and have only dated one girl, about 4 years ago. I would like to start dating again. One of the girls I know said that if I wanted to start dating, I'll need a car and that I have to "step up my game". She says that the girls think the Vespa is cute, but wouldn't really date someone who drives one as a sole method of transportation.
So here is my dilemma. I've started the car shopping research (I actually have another post in this same thread) and don't know what kind of car to get.
Some background:
Budget is very generous (less than 100k).
I do care about what the car says about me.
I kind of want the car to say "I'm loaded" but not in a "new money" sort of way.
Some cars I have thought of are:
Mercedes Benz GLK 250 Diesel - A lot of people of a negative cultural stereotype drive these kind of cars in LA
Porsche Macan - Soccer mom?/New Money?
80s/early 90s era Volvo Station Wagon 240 - Bingo?
You're choosing a car to attract women? Seriously..........
No.
I'm deciding to buy a car because I want to start dating again (I don't own one currently); I live in Los Angeles.
I'm asking for help on what car I should get. The car should send the message that "I'm loaded" but not in a "new money" sort of way.
You didn't say you didn't want a flashy car. I would not consider ANY 4 door car flashy though. You just said "Budget is very generous (less than 100k). I do care about what the car says about me.

M5 says all those things.
Oh okay, I wasn't sure if you were serious or not. Apologies. I will look into this. The BMWs in Los Angeles also have a tendency to be driven by certain negative cultural stereotypes, but I will investigate further.
When you put it in the way that you did, M5 actually sounds like a very well-thought out choice.

Am I thinking too much?
Yes. You can brand yourself as a conservationist. You live in LA, there are TONS of environmentally conscious people out there. That Vespa probably gets 70 miles per gallon. Tell it like it is - you don't want to own an expensive and gas-hogging vehicle when you don't need one. For some, the Vespa may be cute... for others, you will be a poster man for conservation and that will be SUPREMELY attractive.
You could also brand yourself as frugal. That will also be very attractive to some women. There are many frugal women out there.
But if you must buy a car, it should be something you're comfortable driving, no matter what you think it'll say about you. I can tell you that I have only ever owned beater cars (most of which I paid less than $1,000 for) and that never impacted my dating life in any way. My first car was really cool (1972 Cadillac Sedan DeVille) and it never got me any dates. I've driven some real rattletraps and they never prevented me from getting any dates. Cars are overrated in the dating world. Just be yourself... and you'll be far happier with the type of women you get. The way you are seems to be frugal and old-school in your mentality. That'll get you plenty of women if you look in the right place.
You won't need a car to date in a big city like LA. This isn't high school when you had to pick up the girl and drive her around. You're 26, you'll be dating twenty-somethings or thirty-somethings, they'll be okay with transporting themselves to and from your dates.
