Huge government (tax payer) subsidies haven't given electric car sales enough life. I guess all the rich people who want a Tesla have bought one, thanks to the working class tax payers. These cars are way ahead of their time and would die a rapid death if we got government out of the way. Some day they may make economic sense, but not today. When will our government stop these failed programs that transfer wealth from the working class to the rich elite?

The idea of an electric car has been around since the inception of the gasoline car and still an unpopular concept with drivers/ buyers. There is no need for the government to subsidize any technology, especially one consumers don't want..

Who said "no more"? As I mentioned, the concept has been around as long as there have been automobiles and entrepreneurs who want to risk their own capital on said technology should be free to do so.
If you .bob believe so strongly in the technology, go ahead and purchase an electric car or invest in related co's, but you shouldn't be allowed to force the rest of us to ride with you.

Range on electric cars & charging time still sucks, but once those improve & prices come down you'll see them become way more mainstream.

Personally I wouldn't even consider an electric car until one is developed that can charge in under 90 minutes and yield a 500-600 mile range per full charge.

Then I'll be able to pick up another Suburban cheap!

Electric vehicles won't really be popular until battery technology gets to a point where they have similar range and refueling/charging times as gas vehicles.

This is a ridiculous statement. Do you know how many gasoline cars can go 500-600 miles before filling up?

The answer: VERY few.

Here's a list of the vehicles that have the longest range... and you'll notice most on the list are either hybrid or diesel.

That list is wrong:
Look at the Passat TDI - it says 50MPG c/w 18.5gal tank =>925 miles (not 690 as wrongly posted which would be about 37mpg).

I know that the diesel TDI will actually have about 45MPG (hwy) so a more realistic would be 832 miles.
City only driving would still give about 40MPG so this would be about 740 miles range.

Back to OP question I do believe that electric vehicles are very limiting, only fit for urban setting (where we have most pollution concern). They are not "pollution free" when looking in big pictures, since extra electrical energy needs to created.

In my opinion diesel is a much better alternative than gasoline for long term.

My 2003 Jetta diesel wagon has a 14.5 gallon tank that I can fill to 16.5. Last 550 mile road trip netted 46.8 mpg. Lots of highway with the AC on. That puts my range at 772 miles.
