Nope, no drunken worker. The hidden headlights were a late year option and around here, fairly common on all models of the 72 Fury. Gotta remember back then they did all kinds of crazy options come January and in some cases, they only offered them from January to May. You'll see a lot of the cars labelled as a 1972 1/2 or whatever the year model was. Ford was notorious for the half year options.

Yes I love my 1969 Chargers. In fact I like all pre-1973 Mopars. Best cars ever made for the money!

This. Like the 64 1/2 Mustang.

"Spring Specials" were common in those days, where manufacturers would package some accessories and trim from higher-level models (like the Fury VIP) into lower-level models, and call them Special Editions. Also, most options in those days were a la carte, instead of the take-it-or-leave-it packages of today. You could sometimes order something like hidden headlights, which would be standard on the highest trim level, on a lesser trim model.

Back then, it could be virtually impossible to find more than one new car on a dealer's lot, that was equipped exactly like any other new car of the same model, at any dealer in a given area. These days, most manufacturers don't offer the number of variations that they used to, and dealers tend to stock only the most popular combinations of those that are offered, so you can often find multiple vehicles of the same model in stock, all equipped the same, and all with the exact same list price.

Some people that lived down on the end of my street bought a new Fury III with the hidden headlights. As someone else posted, it was a popular upgrade.
