My wife and I are moving about a mile away and will have to start parking at the train station. This means that we will want a second car so that one of us can pick up our daughter from day care and one of us can drop her off. We have a 2012 Toyota Camry that we like and will continue to use for most of our driving (trips, shopping on the weekend), this car will only be used for the 4.5 mile daily circuit from home -> daycare -> train station -> home.

Neither of us our very knowledgeable about cars and would appreciate suggestions on what to purchase. We're looking for something that is

-reliable
-inexpensive
-can fit one, possibly two car seats
-can handle a little bit of snow and ice

right now we're considering either buying a used Toyota or possibly a Subaru. Is there anything else we should be considering? Suggestions on the model and best "bang for your buck" model year would be greatly appreciated as well. We'd like to stay around $10k if possible, but if paying more now will be cheaper in the long run we would consider that, too.

Thanks

Mazdas are good, but they are somewhat rust-prone.

Check out a new Dodge Grand Caravan. They sell for about $16-18k. A little more than you were planning on spending, but that's about the most car you can get for your money.

The Dodge Journey that is CPO and 2-3 years old may fit the Op's criteria as well but hard to Beat the Grand Caravan as long as it is under Factory warranty

You might think I'm nuts, but take a look at slightly older Lincoln Towncars. Reliable as a pet rock (there's a reason limo companies keep them forever), and big as a gymnasium for kid and grocery hauling. And, you can get a nice one for well under ten grand!

My daughter just purchased a Toyota Corolla (1999 with low miles) and she's pleased as punch with it. It gets 30+ mpg and will probably last to 200,000 miles.

Those things just won't die.

And they're just darling!

Scion XB... They have lots of room inside.. Enough for 2 car seats or 3 booster seats... All the amenities.. Great gas mileage.. Fun to drive.... Fairly inexpensive.. From 2004 thru present models....

I have an 05 & 06 and they get an average of 30 mpg each....

With your short commute, did you consider leasing an electric car? Not so sure about that "snow and ice" part though.

Look for a mid to late 2000s Honda Civic.
