Since you are looking into expanding you options, why not consider minivans? They have more space/ practicality than any 3 row SUV and are cheaper to operate.

Minivans are not an option as we do occasional towing.

Not all automotive questions are so easily answered as this one.

We will be hauling three kids, two adults.
4x4 is a must as we get 100 or more inches of snow here a year, mostly lake effect

Right now im playing around with the idea of these two durangos
2005 60k miles 5.7 4x4 for $9,500
2007 125k miles 5.7 4x4 for $8000

Any thoughts between these two?

Id love a sequoia but the mileage on the used ones for the they are asking....doesnt seem to make much sense to me.

With that towing aspect in mind I would suggest (like others posters have suggested) looking at Late model Chevy Suburban's or Ford Expeditions.

They are the two SUVs that come right to the top of my list for vehicles can best meet your needs that you stated here overall IMO.

We go through quite a few SUVs. After some experimenting we determined nothing beats the Chevrolet Suburban. Any detrimental cost impact from purchase, petrol consumption, or maintenance is more than made up for in versatility, comfort and space. Our employees consistently requested one of the suburbans over other SUVs. We tried all of the common models of mid size and large SUVs and ended up returning to exclusively suburbans. Although we do use some Range Rovers overseas and in Central/South America.

They are reasonably capable on or off road. They are really the only vehicle practical for moving seven adults in relative comfort along with luggage and equipment. hey are capable of decent acceleration and top speed when needed. They are easily upgraded and equipped with larger alternators, batteries and other accessories and equipment. They also are unparalleled in towing. However they do not tend to jar your teeth from your head when traveling on rough surfaces at high speeds as some trucks are wont to do. We tried some Expeditions, but found them not as reliable, not as comfortable and not as easy to modify for our needs. They were decent vehicles for their type, but not really on par with the suburban. For upscale comfort and a bit more stock power the Escalade is also a good vehicle, but you can make a better one buy purchasing a suburban and using the cost savings to upgrade it to you liking and needs.
