I have a 2009 yaris with 21,000 miles, brought brand new from the showroom, haven't even had the car for 4 years, have maintenance done every 5000 miles, where they rotate tires. Last visit was informed that i need to buy new tires, due to dry rot. First reaction was, you got to be kidding. They rotate tires every 5000 miles, and nobody noticed that tires were bad. Even had a 4 wheel alignment with bad tires. Still can't believe tires are dry rotted, i'm still financing the car, and tires are dry rotted. Have anyone else had this problem? Still in shock!!!
So you're complaining why? Are you upset because you didn't have to buy tires sooner?
Dry rot is hardly something to be shocked about. What makes you think the tires were bad 5000 miles ago that they should have been replaced then? Did you inspect them?
Many on here do not know that the 3rd pedal was NOT the Gas pedal as in todays cars.....Three pedals was Three pedals then.
Definitely! ;-) and they don't know what it did to your spine when turning the crank and it kicked back.... ouch... But then again tire vulcanization was in its early stages, and paved road were a luxury... Though I will keep the tin Lizzy until the end, even if it won't do much better than 40 mph... though the '36 V8 was a great get-away car.
I had never heard of "dry rot" in terms of car tires until yesterday when I took my car ('02 Toyota Corolla) in to be serviced. Granted, the tires are a few years old, because I don't drive that much (71,000 miles on it over 6 1/2 years). The last time I had a tire changed (maybe more than one) was almost 3 years ago. Can dry rot occur in such a short time period?
I have also found that using the tire cleaning in wand car washes accelerates the dry rot. If you use these, stop and use a scrub brush and soft scrub or similar cleaner.
My tires arent that great so i avoid high speed driving & stay off the freeways. I wont go any faster then 50 mph. It does take me longer to get to my destination cause i take the back roads but thats ok. My spare donut is 28 yrs old (1985) & my tires are 6-13 yrs old.
My tires dry rotted as well….I got plenty of mileage out of them but after googling found that it was common in my certain type of tires and they have since been taken off the market. I was not pleased since I'm selling the car later this year but….you have to have decent tires.
