I was at Auto Zone tonight and next to engine the oil aisle I noticed a whole lot of oil additives claiming all sort of miracles, like stopping oil burnings and oil leaks. The common wisdom is that modern engine oil doesn't need additives and whatever miracle they are selling doesn't work anyway. The fact that shelves were full of them says otherwise. Oh, I picked up one but it was kind of sentimental. Saw a bottle of Motor Honey and those of a certain age may recall Paul harvey selling it on his radio show. I have a high mileage truck and I am going to put to the test its claim that it reduces oil consumption.

Since we're going into winter Motor Honey was probably a terrible idea.

Well, I haven't put it in yet. It was an impulse buy. I guess Paul Harvey is still making a sale long after he is gone.

None of them work. The only thing they manage to lube up well is your wallet.

As long as people keep buying this snake oil manufacturers of the product will continue to sell it.
Modern oils have all the required additives to benefit your engine.

A good read from an amsoil site, might be a bit biased toward Amsoil products but does air some fallacies in the oil additive business.

They do have some click demos in stores. I am sure many have seen the gear demo. They stack up bunch of interlocking gears with the bottom gear turning in the "oil pan". As gears are turned oil is pulled up to top gears. This does not happen with just plain oil in the pan, of course. To a passerby it looks pretty convincing.

That's what I've always read. I've even read that some of the additives can counteract the additive packages in modern oils. Not sure if that's true or not but I don't use additives so it doesn't matter to me.

My bro who is a Slick50 junkie gives me a can of the product every Xmas, the only use i have for it is starting campfires in the summer, just drizzle the stuff over some newspapers and light it, makes for a very slow burning and safe firestarter
