Recently at the auto show I saw both the Chrysler 200 and the Acura TLX ( a very nice car btw) had a nine gear transmission. I know large trucks can have a lot of gears, but what about passenger cars? How many more gears can a car have in the future?

Instead of getting that many gears, they should have just switched to CVT.

For some reason, the current Chrysler 200 reminds me of the Chrysler 300M.

All I can think about when these 600 gear transmissions are announced is "I bet it takes the second coming of Christ to rebuild one"

You don't, you toss the entire car.

I don't mind gears. It usually means better gas mileage or better performance. Not always but most of the time lol

No passenger car needs all these gears.. Had 2 for the longest time, then 3.. Now 7,8,9 is way too much.. Nothing you are doing in your car you need that many gears...

In the case of the 200, the 9-speed is useless as gears 1-3 are too tall!!

Beats the purpose of having this much gears in the first place..

I dunno. My Jeep has an 8 speed, the one I had before it had a 5 speed, same engine. I can definitely tell the difference with the extra gears. Stays in the powerband longer, better acceleration coming off the line, and much easier passing. I don't know that I'd need a 9 speed or a 10 speed in it...but I definitely like the 8 speed.

Perhaps the 200 is just slow.
