Just looking at potential options. Am considering the 2014/2015 Toyota Highlander - have 2 kids, both still in child car seats (although the oldest will be probably in just a booster by next year). However as we have family visit often, the third row will need to be occasionally used, probably by kids (big enough to not need car seat, small enough to fit there).
The issue we've found comparing SUVs to minivans - third-row access (for those SUVs that even have them) is usually somewhat difficult anyway. With child car seats installed on both sides of the second row, some SUVs make third row access impossible without removing the car seats (something I try to avoid), while others seem to have a slide-forward type deal which, in theory, might allow leaving the child seat in place while accessing the third row.
As far as putting the child seats in the middle and one side, I've never been able to fit them in the edge/middle without fighting or mischief ensuing between the kids, so each end of the row is best.
The new design Highlander LOOKS like it might be possible to tilt forward the second row seat and get to the back, but I can't tell.
I think if you get the captains chairs in the second row, you can fold down the table between the seats and walk through. A tight fit, but a kid small enough to sit back there could do it.
I have a GL-450 - which can accommodate not only 2 but three car seats. Problem is, once the car seats are there the third row is rendered useless.
I am looking at other"options" and I have realized GM.s offerings in the form of chevy Tahoe / GMC Yukon / Cadillac Escalade. are the best options. Choose your own based on budget.
