From what I've seen in my area of Mi, Tesla is selling rather well, but the symbolic part annoys me. Do we still really need dealers to exclusively sell motor vehicles?
However, Snyder's tune will change if Tesla opens a big factory in his state, or if the established automakers decide to adopt Tesla's marketing strategy.
Lets be honest, though. Elon Musk is already panhandling people he knows for money to run the biz since his divorce. This is just a way for a floundering company that is only making a "profit" due to accounting tricks and other automakers giving them handouts to save on costs. So, a factory just ain't coming.
With that being said, he should just keep his operation small and not spread the company too thin at this point. Trying to spread into states that will require the company to operate a dealership just isn't worth the fight for Tesla.
The law Synder, and the Michigan state legislature put in or is enforcing is an unnecessary regulation that does not benefit the general public, or serve the general public. Like the other states with laws like Michigan's it serves the dealership lobby. If Tesla wants to sell their vehicles a certain way they should have every right to do so. The consumer/market should decide whether they like it, not the government.
Don't get why Tesla doesn't have local dealers and play by the rules already established.
If you buy a Tesla, you need to take it to a Tesla shop to get it serviced. Just add a few desks and a couple sales guys to sell the damn things. You add more jobs to the community, it's a win win. Plus, I guarantee you will sell more cars if you have a real dealership, instead of selling them out of a shopping mall.
That wouldn't accomplish anything as it would still be direct sales to customers. Ever tried to buy a car from Ford or Toyota or GM? You can't.

The rules are engineered to make it harder for newcomers to enter the market, which is exactly what we're encountering.

Well, Elon Musk appears to disagree - and I hear he's been doing fair-to-middling for himself.
Then California should ban cars manufactured in Michigan!
Why? Nobody in Michigan is banning cars manufactured anywhere. Cars built in Michigan have to be sold by the same rules as those made outside of Michigan.

If anything this change makes it easier for Tesla to enter the market because they don't have to set up their own franchise network; they can sell through existing networks.
