I took my car to have the oil changed and they told me I needed to replaced the AC belt. The car is making a loud squealing noise....not all the time, just intermittently. Sometimes when I turn the wheel, sometimes when I'm accelerating, but never when it's idle. Could the AC belt make it squeal like that even though I'm not running the AC? That doesn't make sense to me

It could be your AC or drive belt. The belt is running whether your AC is on or not as the AC actuation is generally controlled by clutch.

Sounds like the belt is stretched.. The squealing that you're hearing could be a number of things.. But if the belt is slack it may not properly be turning the power steering pump, and that would explain squealing during a turn.

I'd believe them. Just realize that there's a possibility that when they replace the belt, they may come back with saying that you need to replace the tensioner as well.

Unless you have less than 3 years/50k miles on the belt.. It's not great loss replacing it along with the tensioner (If so required).. Unless a belt is quite new, anytime that you have to pull something where you remove the belt replaced, I tend to say go ahead and replace the belt. Alternator, Power Steering pump, AC Compressor, etc. They're not dirt cheap, but, they're cheaper than being on the side of the road.
