new 2015 owner - when to do first and subsequential oil changes? (engines, gasoline)

i just got a brand new 2015 mazda. i'm use to doing my first oil change at 1k miles then every 3-4k after that. the dealer guy said once every 5-7k (with the first oil change being at 5k) with full synthetic is good enough.
is he right? are modern day engines that advanced and good now?
I don't think the dealer has a reason to lie about the service intervals. But if I had any doubt, just simply check the manual. I know there's a detailed schedule, usually up to 12 years/120,000 miles.

I'm very old school, I do just what the OP said, I change the first oil at maybe 1,000 miles and 3,000 after that. My logic is, there is a lot of metal shavings rolling around in the motor from when it was built and the sooner you can get those out the better. Might be no so true today, but oil is the cheapest thing you will ever put into a motor.
Stick with the manufacturer recommendation during the warranty period. I would not even risk doing it myself. I don't want to give any excuses to anybody to deny coverage.
You'll want to change the first time at about 1000 miles. The reason is two fold. You'll want to get the break in materials out of the system and any left over debris from the manufacture out of it too. You'll want to change it early because the engine when new has to "plate up" with the additives that are in the oil. When an engine is new, it goes thru the additive package pretty quick. After that, you can use any quality branded oil that has the Ford spec on the bottle and change at an easy 5000 miles or go to 7500 miles{synthetic not required}. There's no need to change any earlier, like at 3000 miles. The issue is the modern engines with lean burn technologies do not make the contaminates of the older engines. We also seal our engines a lot better. It's rare to find one dripping oil all over the driveway anymore. That means dirt stays out. We also have much cleaner burning gasoline that just doesn't make the contaminants either. In your owners manual you'll find 2 maintenance schedules for various driving conditions. The severe service will likely recommend the above OCI.
I'd follow whatever the factory recommends. Changing the oil at 1k miles is a waste of time and money.
