I am sure everyone has their lemon stories, so I wanted to kick off by sharing mine.

In 1988, my mom purchased a 1982 Mercury Cougar for $2600. It was unfair to even call it a Cougar, because basically, it was a Ford Fairmont with a cat hood ornament. It had the 200 straight six....white, four door, half brown vinyl top, brown interior and in showroom condition. Keep in mind, I was 14, this was our first car since she and my dad divorced eight years before, and we were very inexperienced in car repairs and knowing when to cut your losses. During the three years of painful ownership, that Cougar gobbled the following:

Carburetor, two transmissions, countless voltage regulators, starters, alternators, batteries, ground straps, rear end bearing, plugs and distributor caps, water pump....shocks, struts, tires.....you'd replace a part, thinking you were good to go for a while, then a week or so later (literally), bam....breakdown and often the same part you replaced! You cannot make this up. We sold it for a hundred dollars.....and replaced it with......what would become my first car, a blue 2 door, 1977 Oldsmobile 98...with a crack in the windshield, broken antenna, missing the pass. side door panel, and it had been sideswiped in the right rear......403 engine...paid five hundred for it from a friend of mine...and it was a million times the car the Cougar ever was. Should have painted the Cougar yellow for a lemon, but knowing the car, it would have turned back to white....

A few years later, my mom bought a 1984 Cavalier, red two door type 10 hatchback.....had its issues here and there, but was nowhere near the problem the Cougar was.
