I think it depends on how you look at it. For instance, my 2013 Elantra said 39 mpg highway on the window sticker when I bought it. Now after this all came out they revised it to say it gets 37 highway and 39 was a mistake. You know what? Who cares? 2 mpg is nothing to get upset over or crucify a car company over. I do 90% highway driving and even with my 2013 just hitting 73,000 miles, I am still getting between 37-42 mpg on the highway......everyday. It doesn't affect me or make me upset. I am very glad I switched from driving GM only for the last 25 years. My 2 cents....everyone is different.

The fact that they lied to get your sale, when you could have bought the other car that actaully gets that mileage does get people upset. That 2mpg is what auto magazines trash manufactorers over. The Chevy Malibu was always stated as lacking in MPG even though it was just 2mpg behind the others it was competing against.
There are have been several auto manufacturers who have had to revise their figures over the years (Ford and BMW got hit with this recently too). There are many causes including corporate greed, rising CAFE standards and imprecise testing standards. I'm not terribly surprised and wouldn't be particularly upset (outside of something crazy like a 10mpg difference). Then you get to the part where real world mileage rarely matches EPA figures anyway.

The EPA says they were off by up to 6 mpg. For a car rated at 30mpg, that would be a 25% error, which is very significant.
Wow. It's definitely a step back for Hyundai. Their new sonata sucks. I mean it looks ok but the 2.0 turbo engine is supposed to output about 245hp but does 0-60 in 8 secs. How in the world is that possible? Mpg is probably in the 20s combined. It's also about $30,000 and probably use premium gas. The mazda6 which sells for $22,000 (base) has 180hp and does 0-60 also in about 8 secs. Mpg is about 37 highway. Probably 30 combined. Runs on 87 gas. Why would anyone pay $8000 more for that?

Because Hyundai is getting just like Honda and Toyota. They are living on their past reputation. They all continue to be good cars but it seems like they have come down a notch.

The point is that automakers cannot be allowed to cheat. That's all. Hyundai/Kia cheated. It matters.
It doesn't mean those aren't good cars.
