The street my house is on ends in a T. Say I'm waiting to turn left, and an oncoming car stops, the driver flashes his/her lights as a signal for me to go (courteous move, considering that they have the right of way. So rather than wave "Thank you", as that other driver may not be able to see my wave, I might just tap my horn in gesture. Any others do this?

No, I don't and wouldn't tap the horn in thanks. I wouldn't want to live on a street where everyone tapped their horn to say thanks. A simple wave is plenty. If they're not looking, as they should be, they don't get a thank you.

What the other driver is doing may be courteous, but it's not smart. When someone does that to me, I motion back to them to proceed. I collided with a car head-on several years ago, because some "courteous" driver motioned for him to pull (from an alley) into the street ahead of him. He pulled in front of him, then in front of me to get to the the other side of the street (4 lanes) for a different direction. I had about 1/10 second to react (10-20 feet at 30 mph) and nowhere to go. My head did go through the windshield, however.

I never use my horn. I wouldn't think of doing it in this situation, either.. because as you've said, this is a street that your house is on.. Probably would annoy the snot out of the people who live on that corner.

I will say, though.. I'm in the south, and it is very, very rare for people to use their horns here. About the only time is if someone is about to run into you.. Either backing out of a parking space, or someone changing into your lane or similar.

That does bring up an interesting question. I bought a new car a few weeks ago. I'll have to figure out where the horn is, just in case I ever want to honk.

I live in a neighborhood of little ticky-tacky boxes on a hill. (IOW, small lots) We had a next-door neighbor a few years ago with a couple teens. Friends would pull up in front and honk their horn until someone came out. A few times I thought about going out... and telling them that it's rude to honk like that.

Absolutley not! Horns are annoying- use 'em to warn of impending danger or crashes and little else.

A wave or friendly salute of thanks is a proper gesture. And remember to flash your own brights to signal your yielding your right of way to others, do it often and enjoy the friendly waves back.

OP Flash your lights while making your turn as a goodwill gesture.

I used my horn today. I was waiting at a stop light and it turned green. Car in front of me did not go...did not go...did not go....finally, I tapped my horn, and he went. Street turned from 2 lanes to 4, and as I moved into other lane, saw that driver was texting.

This is when I have used my horn. When you've figured out that the person in front of you has either dozed off or eating lunch, It's time for that little horn tap.

I wave. If they don't see it, so what.

Horn honking, when it's not a true emergency, is obnoxious.
