It was a decent-looking car, especially the 2nd-gen refresh.... but to imply it's the Escort equivalent of an SHO is a reach. It just didn't have the performance to back up its looks, with the possible exception of the very limited turbo edition which could run to 60 in the mid-9s and the 1/4 in the mid to upper 16s. I suppose that wasn't too bad for the mid-80s. But the rest of the EXPs were just Escorts wearing a sports-car jersey.

It really doesn't. But as has been mentioned above, some versions of its spiritual predecessor (the ZX2) do deliver on its sporting pretension. This is particularly true of the S/R version which had significant suspension upgrades and an engine tune good for an extra 13HP over the already uprated 130HP motor for a total of 143. Nothing transcendent but pretty decent for a 2500lb car.

===Funny you metion a Chevy Beretta. Back in the late 80s they were everywhere. I havent seen one in years but last week I actually saw a Beretta GTU in fairly decent shape in Orlando.
Last Fall we saw a Ford Model A with a current regular registration in Peterborough, NH. A few years ago I knew a upstate NH farmer that bought a new Chevrolet in 1928 and was still driving it. He said it met his transport needs so why buy another.

I saw a chevy citation the other day. WOW, one of GMs worst cars. still gittin around though.
We have a Model A, and drive it around regularly. Not just a parade and show car. They will do 45-50 so you can taken them out and about.
1959 Cadillacs are a popular selection for restoration, as that is the year the Caddy's famous fins reached their highest mark- that car will never go extinct.
Although, back in the day, when a 59 Caddy was just an old car- those fins really were big on rusting out.
