A friend and I went to a hardware store yesterday and, when I exited his pickup truck, I noticed a flash of white on the sidewall of his tire. Where the tread meets the sidewall, there is just a bit of white showing, as if he'd rubbed the sidewall against a street curb or something. The tire is still holding pressure just fine.

EDIT: Looks to be a scrap -- there's no indentation on the sideway.

In my opinion, this tire needs to be replaced as the sidewall is the weakest part of the tire.
On the other hand, is this tire still serviceable if it is moved to a rear tire position instead of its current front tire position?

What say you?

With tires my philosophy is, if there is any doubt replace. I sure don't want an accident or poor traction because of tire issue.

Traction shouldn't be an issue. Still has lots of tread left.

Trucks often have full size spares, he could swap the suspect tire with it.
He doesn't want a blow out on the highway, moving the tire to the back could minimise damage if it did happen.

I agree with JasperHobbs . . . 110%.

Damaged, defective and/or OLD (six plus years old) tires are just NOT WORTH THE RISK.

It's gone. Replacing it tomorrow as part of a pair. I always buy tires in sets.

Thanks, all.

The tire does not need to be replaced, all that has happened is the cover gum strip was scraped off on a curb. The cover gum strip does nothing but cover the white sidewall; it has no structural job at all. I used to work at a tire manufacturer in quality product evaluation. I have seen thousands of tire failures from testing and NONE of them were the result of a gum strip failure.

Stopped by a tire shop today and talked to the foreman. He looked at the tire, laughed, and said "you scrapped it on a curb, didn't you? It's fine."

Think I'll move it to the rear just to keep an eye on it but I should get another 15K on this set before they need replacement.
