I have no experience with buying used cars or Nissans, any glaring red flags with this particular vehicle or known issues that would prevent at least a test drive?

I've had two Rogues, an '09 and a '12. I've had no issues except for a recall on the CVT tranny where they just did some kind of a computer update or something.
But I guess the CVT would be the issue if there is one so if your friend is purchasing from a dealer try to get some kind of a warranty on the deal, even a 12 month/12,000 miles. Then pay attention for any kinds of vibrations from the drivetrain because if there is going to be a problem, from what I've heard that's how it starts.
But if the CVT does go out, it's not that major, I think a rehabbed/reconditioned one installed is like $2500.
The 2.5 engine is bullet proof. Nissan has been using that same engine for about 15 years with excellent service. Lot's of torque and good mileage.

Just have someone thoroughly check the cvt for any issues although its covered under warranty till 60k miles. The rest of the vehicle is pretty solid.
I have a 2012 Rogue and had an issue with the cvt whining at just 38k miles. After a cvt fluid flush and fill, the cvt was fine. Luckily the dealership covered the cost but be mindful that a cvt fluid change at the dealership runs around $300.
$14k seems like a pretty decent deal as KBB has it listed at $15,400 as their fair purchase price from a dealer.

Get a Carfax or Autocheck report, look for accident history or salvage title.
My wife has had two Rogues and loved them both. No issues with them.
