Toyota Motor (TM, news, msgs) has overtaken Ford Motor (F, news, msgs) as the No. 2 automaker in the United States and is closing in on the title of top-selling U.S. brand.

It is the first time since 1931 that Ford has not been the No. 2 automaker in the United States.

Soon we are going to be dependent on foreign nations for our cars in addition to our gasoline. Actually, just wait until all American based businesses fail and we are dependent on everyone else for everything. This has been coming for a while though. I'm not surprised.

There are other cars out there that are reliable. That's one reason I drive a Lincoln Town Car.

And I believe Toyota has had more recalls than any other car.

A Malibu for the most dependable entry level car! My dad had one of those and he had so many problems with it he traded it in. That car kept having crappy brake problems every month. He was happy to trade in that Malibu!

Well it depends on how old the Malibu was. American auto makers have improved a ton since the new millennium and improved a lot over their slump of reliability in the 90's.

We are a Toyota family and love them!
Currently own a 2007 4-runner and a 1998 Tacoma TRD.
This is my second 4-runner and we have never had a problem with either vehicle.
Like them or not, they brought jobs to the U.S.

If you really want to know the truth, Toyota passed Ford long ago and has probably passed GM or is close to doing so now. The reason this is not official is because GM and Ford sell millions of fleet vehicles and neither Toyota or Honda have fleet programs. If you took out all the fleet cars and just looked at what individual consumers buy, Toyota would have been number one long ago.

From my expericence if you buy a V8 powered rear drive vehicle, the American cars are as good as any made. I had a Ford Mustang GT and drove the hell out of it for 12 years and the only things I ever replaced were the clutch and water pump. My dad had a Ford F150 pick up that never gave him any trouble and provided years and years of good service. The only problem car we had was a Chevy wagon back in the 60s and even it was mostly minor stuff (didn't like to start in the cold). That said, if you want to buy anything else, I would go with the foreign makes. Every American car I know of that is either front drive or a V6 or 4 is a piece of crap. For awhile Ford made the Taurus in the 80s that looked good but even that was a lot of trouble from what I heard. My only experience came from my wife's Escort wagon which was a total piece of trash. The thing gave constant trouble and some of it could not be fixed because the parts were so bad that, even when you replaced them, the new ones would break within a year (ignition key switch for one). The engine blew a header gasket at 72,000 miles and, when the tranny dropped 7000 miles later, I said ENOUGH. We junked it and bought a Honda and have not a day of trouble except for the heat/AC switch going out which is a small thing.
