I wonder how often those who attempt to block the zipper mergers out are also the same ones who are the self-appointed left lane patrollers who drive exactly the speed limit.
And very likely the same people who race you to the merge point (two lanes merging at regular speed, not traffic) to be first to get there, and then slam on the brakes. Why would you drive fast BEFORE the merge, but not AFTER??
Hey, guess what? Zipper merging only works if two lanes are merging into one DIFFERENT lane. In real life what you find is one lane is ENDING. THAT lane should be vacated as soon as you realize that it is ending, and the remaining lane can continue on at normal speed. No need for everyone to be stopped at the head of the line to allow for this zipper action to actually be safely implemented.
Exactly. There's nothing magical about merging at the last minute (unless you are the one getting to push ahead of everyone else, I guess). I've often seen "zipper merging" done successfully and smoothly right after the sign notifying that a lane is ending - one person merges right after that sign and many other cars somehow manage to zipper right there until someone comes along that just can't STAND it that they aren't going to be ahead of everyone else and rushes ahead.
Now, if both lanes are full then zippering at the head of the line makes sense. One line full and another ending and merging into it? Not so much.
This doesn't even count the people who are already in the line being merged into who pull out and zoomie zoom up to the front of the line and get back in. Very similar self-justification thought processes going on, though, I'm pretty sure.
Why do other drivers feel the need to push all the way up to the damn barrier cones before merging over, when there are likely signs a long way back telling them to do it?

Why would one waste precious highway real estate and merge in so soon? You still have a lane for a mile/half mile/etc. Keep going
all of you who wish to rush up to the end and beg in please continue to do so cause all of us who detest that will not let you in ..then lets see who sits and who moves ...

Having fun, right?
Exactly the same way as those who think they have the right to merge at very last moment even if they have to drive over a shoulder for a while are the same ones who jump in say "exit only" "or left or right only" lane just to merge back at last moment to be ahead of drivers who are driving in a sane manner? Also they get upset when drivers in merging lane don't allow them to merge back.
a little different but i also hate people who will pass you on the right while on a overpass exit and people who ride those exits just to avoid a lite ..but i even see police do that all too often ..

First of all, all I was saying is that you should always merge at the front of the line (when two lanes are merging into one), regardless of how many people choose to merge earlier. The article posted above also agrees that this is the correct method.
I have NEVER advocated nor have I ever driven on a shoulder or a lane marked for another purpose to get ahead. Those who merge at the front are not breaking the law, and those who straddle the lanes to prevent this should stop thinking they are.

When you do that, everyone sits, and no one moves.

How do you figure that? The lane being merged into continues moving just fine in that situation.
