I find your post kind of funny, as I AM a car guy. I've obviously paid more attention to car design over the years than you, so I won't take offense to your comment.
And no, I hardly hate GM. I've owned several, and find some of their designs to be beautiful. The Mako Shark Corvette design (which ran from the late 60s to early 80s) is still one of the most beautiful cars ever made. Same with the first three generations of Camaros. Their designs, from a beauty standpoint, were far and above the other car companies in the 60s and 70s.
GM just tries too hard to be "cool" sometimes, and, especially of late, have been making cars that look like they were designed with an ax. The XLR, the Aztec, the Avalanche, and the newest Corvette are just SOME of their major fails as a result of this terrible path they seem to be going down.
Indeed they were. Then they made the Corvette bland for '84, ruined it for '97, and it just keeps biting more dust as the years progress.
You'd think a car as special as the Corvette could or would buck the 30+ year trend that all other American cars have followed. Only now....do those of us who came of age at the peak of the American auto industry's greatest era....truly know how good we had it.
The Aztec....or Craptec as I call it.....Those toaster/hamster things out now...Cube? They're so ugly I have blocked their name from my memory.....Most cars from the 80's.
ETA: My aunt had a Pontiac LeMans when I was a teenager. That thing looked like a blu Nerf football.....ugliest thing I ever saw until the Craptec popped up.
The Aztek hands down, especially over cars like the XLR or Transport. It just wasn't bad looking. It was garish, in your face bad. Head and shoulders over those others.
Was there a single person on earth who liked them? I know they didn't sell well....like 5 or 6 were sold....maybe 10.
AMC Pacer
Pontiac Aztec
Ford Mustang II
Chevy Monte Carlo - ANY year!
1971 Buick Riviera
Dodge Omni / Plymouth Horizon
We can't be friends! I absolutely LOVE my 2005 Chevy Monte Carlo SS Tony Stewart Signature Series model. It's a sweet ride.....and no Tony didn't come with it....damn it!
AMC (early 70s) for the win:
Matador
Pacer
Gremlin
Hornet
Ford Gran Torino mid 70s version. Big front overhang, front heavy in design with terrible visibility.
Ford Edsel with large vertical fish mouth cowl front grill
Pontiac Aztek
Recent Chryslers win out a number of ugliest spots on my list. The Daimler/Cerberus era was not kind to them. There is no real order to this list...just some ugly ones that popped into my mind.
1965 Mercury Montclair
Pontiac Aztek
1986 Merkur XR4Ti
1973-75 Oldsmobile Cutlass
1974-78 AMC Matador (sedan and coupe)
2007-10 Jeep Compass
2008-12 Jeep Liberty
2006-10 Chrysler Sebring
1996-98 Ford Taurus
1980-85 GM X-bodies
1974-78 Mustang II
What do you consider the ugliest American cars of the last 50 years?
It seems as though GM has a real lock on that category.
My choices:
1. Cadillac XLR
2. 1994-96 Chevrolet Impala/Caprice
3. Pontiac Aztec
4. Pontiac Transport
5. Chevrolet Avalanche
6. Dodge 024 / Plymouth TC3
7. AMC Pacer
8. 2014 Chevrolet Corvette
9. 1993-2002 Pontiac Firebird
10. 2010-present Chevrolet Camaro
"Last 50 years" but nothing earlier than the Pacer? Hmmm....
