What the OP did not make clear, is to describe what failed when trying to start the car. Does it have enough battery to crank, but won't fire? Or is the battery too dead to crank the engine? It is common in such forums for "does not start" to be the incomplete description of the problem, without explaining what happens when trying to start.

Also, does the problem resolve if it has been run for a while after turning off the lights, or does it fail to start if the lights had been used during any part of the trip?

the bottom line is that the OP still needs to have the car checked out by a competent tech for basic electrical/electronics system functioning.

Alternator is dying, parasitic drain when car is shut down, battery is done-for!

Both items recently replaced per the OP and have been checked out "good".

If a parasitic drain of the alternator (a not uncommon problem with the alt's in these cars with high mileage) was the primary causation of a low battery so that the car wouldn't start, then it would be a problem all the time ... even if the lights or A/C weren't being used.
