Default Gas prices UK $9.42 a gallon

I have been reading your comments on US gas prices.. I have within the last hour been to fill up my car and does this sound horryfying or not! These are English pounds.. 1.07 per litre x 4.5 litres to the gallon = 4.71 pounds x UK/USA exchange rate of $2.00/pound =$9.42 per gallon.. Thats why they call it rip off Britain.... Any comments?

Well, almost everything costs a LOT more in the UK. For consumer goods, what costs 1USD in the US costs about 1GBP in the UK.

My first comment is that there are 3.79 liters in a gallon. But I feel your pain. I just filled up my Vito for 87 Euros. I am down here in what you guys refer to as peasant country- Italy. Its the taxes babe. Taxes to pay social services like healthcare and schools.

Something like 70% of the price is made up of duty and tax. The tax (VAT @ 17.5%) is charged on the duty too!

But as someone else mentioned, tax is part of life, it pays for schools, health, roads, military.....so it's not exactly a rip-off as the state and its citizens benefit from the income.

There was a fuel tax 'escalator' in the UK which increased prices year on year, supposedly a green tax intended to discourage car use.

See Fuel Tax - PetrolPrices.com

BTW They also increase tax on landfill every year, to encourage better recycling rates.

UK pint is 20fl oz US pint is 16fl oz therefore the UK gallon is larger hence more litres to the gal.

I do have to say that the price does equal out in a way, not many cars in the UK have 4liter engines, 1.6 and 1.8 litre engines do many more mpg therefore evening it out a bit.
