How much does it cost to fix it. A mechanic said junk the car but it can't be that serious can it if everything else including the engine is in perfect tip top condition.

hard to tell without more detail. Your "loose wheel" could be as simple as loose lug nuts, more serious like a bad wheel bearing, or worse yet, a problem with the rear differential if it's a rear-drive car. Whether or not to junk it we would need to know the age, how many miles on it, make and model.
That's quite the statement. "My rear tire has a loose wheel".
There is very little information for anyone to go on. How about year/make/model of the car and symptoms of the problem. Did the mechanic write up a quote? What did it actually say?
Anyways, I'll assume it's a bad wheel bearing. If that's the case, get it fixed now. Most brake shops do them routinely and it's not a huge expense.
When I was a kid, teenager, I replaced the entire rear axle for peanuts money. But yes you need to find out what in detail it needs first. usually these things are not that costly especially if you find a reasonable mechanic shop.
This thread could well be a lame attempt at trolling.
However the fact remains that if the OP has a wheel that is loose, it is possible to lose that wheel.
