Hybrids may be fast, but they do not make much sense to me.
HELLO, I am going to make a vehicle with that runs on 2 energy sources, has 2 powerplants, 2 fuel storage areas, tons of excessive weight, and a bunch of very, VERY expensive and complicated electronics to integrate the whole mess.

They are powerful, and extremely fuel efficient. The weakest part of a hybrid, based on historical repair data, is the engine. That's something that is shared with a traditional vehicle. Automatic transmissions and manual transmissions have required more repairs than the CVTs used in most hybrids. They will make more sense once manufacturing is improved.

Many of the more luxury brands are using the electric motors to gain horsepower, with the increased efficiency being a minor positive side effect. For the typical commuter hybrid, most have sufficient power for their daily use, but their drivers tend to drive annoyingly slow try and get to the EPA mileage figures. I think most of us have experienced being stuck behind a Prius many times.
You wouldn't know it by the way people drive their Priuses around here! They cut people off when pulling onto the road, and then go 15 to 20 below the posted speed limit!
Then the OP should have said "these hybrids are FAST!" I was expecting to see someone try to drag race a Prius and an Insight, or something equally as boring as that.
There's a huge difference between a supercar hybrid like the 918 and a typical hybrid like a Prius. The 918 uses the electric motors along with the gas engine strictly for power and not for gas savings. I believe on some of the supercars you can run in electric only, but only for a very brief time. Again, they are used in conjunction with each other for crazy amounts of power. Cars like the Prius will generally try to use the electric motor when it can, and when it runs out of battery, switches to gas for recharging and propulsion. The Prius wants to only run on electric if it can...the 918 wants both.
