My town has leftover Chevy Impala's; they have segued over to the new Caprice's and just took delivery of a new Tahoe. Neighboring town has a couple of Crown Vics left over, but have gotten a few Dodge Chargers and a couple of Ford Taurus Interceptors. (NJ) State Police have Crown Vics but are replacing them with Chevy Caprice. Believe it or not, a few years ago I saw one NJSP Dodge Magnum (marked). State also has unmarked Dodge Chargers.
Some of you guys may be confusing the new Caprice for the old Impala. I doubt any one is switiching over to out of production old body Impalas and I haven't heard of a new body police version or even a non-pursuit version. The new Caprice looks like a long and low old Impala.
Around here the city cops generally use Caprices and Explorers.
The county Sherrifs use Chargers.
The suburbs use manly "Chevy Yukons" that is, Tahoes and a few Tauruses
The state uses a little of everything.
So in short, you have to know them all around here.
You are right. I meant Caprice not Impala in my areas report. We did have impalas in the 90s but the new ones are indeed Caprices which are actually Holdens from Australia interestingly enough.
It's a pretty even spit between older Crown Vic's and Chargers of various years.
Then of course, you get your marked and unmarked Explorers, Tahoes, Camaros, and F-150's
