A "new car" doesn't have to be brand new off the lot. You can get a much nicer car that's just 2-3 years old, with fairly low mileage. Get yourself started now to form the habit of letting someone else take the depreciation hit of a brand new car. You'll save tons of money over your lifetime.
I got a full ride scholarship and I'm commuting from home so I thought I would treat myself to a new car because I absolutely hate what I'm driving now. Budget is 20-25k and the absolute most important requirement is spaciousness. I'm not very tall (5'11), but driving in the Ford fiesta that I have now is an absolute painful affair. I've been looking at the Mazda cx5 and the Toyota Prius. Does anyone else have any other recommendations for a good car with good legroom?
Spaciousness in a Prius?
i would rather drive the Fiesta you have now than come out of law school with not only debt but debt on a depreciating asset. Bonus points if it's a paid off car. Be smart. Graduate totally debt free. Treat yourself to a new car once you graduate and have a good job a house and money in your pocket.
Or
You can be like a lot of the other people out there. In debt, paying everyone and hating life.
Damn dude I thought you lawyers are supposed to be all kinds of smartified.
The guy asked for car advice, not financial or life advice. I'm gonna go out on a limb and suggest that someone bright enough to get a full-ride scholarship to law school at a time when enrollment is plummeting and they're nearly desperate for students' tuition checks is probably going to land on their feet just fine and have no problem making the payments on a $25K car.
And if you don't think a Prius is spacious, ride in one some day. Particularly the V model. They're bigger on the inside than you'd guess from the outside.

At that price point, the two with the most legroom, hip/shoulder room are the Passat and the Accord.

I'm 5'10.5" in socks and find my CX-5 enjoyable. Gets good mileage. Handles well. Hauls people and things. Great crash-test and reliability ratings.

Have you ever seen what cars look like around college? It makes zero sense to buy a new car only to have it get beat up parking at school, but you are going to law school so that makes no sense also.
