1/2 ton will always be limited for towing / cargo capacity (basically an overgrown car chassis and components). Usually they are cheaper to maintain than 'floating axle' / big boy 2500's (brakes / tires / suspension...)

Youre right. Plus the straight axle is easy to maintan. The float front wheel drive axle wasmade for comfort. But i dont care for comfort. Just longetivity.
And how is it easy to do a cummins install amd what is the cost?
Can you please tell me why the earlier 6.2 diesel was crap? Also which latet diesel suburbans?
the early 6.2s were rather lethargic, and unreliable. they had the same hit or miss quality that the ford 6.0 diesels had, but without the power and efficiency.
yes you can swap a later duramax diesel in, you can also swap in a cummins. it all depends on how much time and effort you want to put into these swaps.
the cummins would be a better swap by the way, especially the earlier two valve cummins, as the amount of electronics is limited.

How about with the cummins, can i keep my 4 speed transmission?
Or do i have to get another one?
I was thinking of trying to get a cheap donor truck with a cummins and doing the install.
There is no way it's going to be a good economic choice to swap a diesel into your Suburban. You would be better off selling yours and buying a diesel if that is what you want. Yes, it can be done, it's just that the expense doesn't justify the swap.
I'm also wondering why you need a 4wd where you live. The 82 will be a gamble no matter what as it's 33 years old but it sounds like a very cool ride and one I'd love to own. As a generality the upkeep will likely make any fuel savings a wash but all the same, again, it sounds like a nice find.
There's a Suburban Silverado 1982 Diesel 2500 that is for sale sold for 2700 in my area.
I wanted a Diesel Suburban which i was thinking of selling mines for 2500. Mines a 90 GMC 4x4 1500 350. I just had new front disc, calipers, pads put on this week and the transmission was rebuilt back in November of 2013. 35 inch offroad tires were put on all 4s back in November 2014. Engine was rebuilt back in 2014. Plus the suburban has been sanded and primed before it gets a new paint. The body has been repaired of any damages.
The Suburban itself has over 200000 miles although the body and frame is in good shape.
The other Suburbam which is the 1982 model has 75000 miles. Guy told me his grandfather gave it to him before he passed away.
It has a 6.2 Detroit Diesel, 700r4 Automatic Transmission(like my Suburban has), it's a 3 quarter ton and the out and inside body is in good condition.
Only problem is, even though i want a diesel suv(1973 to 1991 Suburban or Excursion 6.0 or 7.3) is that it does not have 4 wheel drive.
What you think?
Sell my Suburban for the diesel even though its a two wheel drive or keep. I was also thinking about if i keep what i have i can convert it to a diesel(6.2 turbo , 6.5 turbo or Cummins although i hope I can keep the same 700r4 transmission)
You haven't said why you want a diesel, or if you have I missed it.
My experience, is that 350 has a lot of life left in it. Especially since it was recently rebuilt.
My '90 GMC has never been rebuilt and has 400,000 miles on it.
Op why not just take a wrecked 2nd Gen dodge Ram 2500/3500 4x4 chassis with a 12-Valve 6-BT Cummins and 5-speed NV4500 manual and mount your 1990 Suburban 1500 body onto it.
Or like other have said sell your 1990 2WD Suburban C1500 for a 1989-1991 Diesel K-2500 diesel esp. a model 1991 with the 4L80-E HD transmission.
Op if it were me and I wanted/needed a 3/4 suburban as a daily driver and a tow/haul rig I would look to the 2000-2006 GMT800 Subrban 2500 with either a 6.0L or 8.1L Vortec V-8
