I drive a 2008 Jeep Grand Cherokee and tonight while I was reversing out of a very tight parking space at my friends apartment building, I went too far back and crashed so hard into a lamppost my friend heard the bang from all the way on the top floor and came running outside peeved at me. I was in the end spot and there was a curb and large truck on either side of me, so I decided to back up straight and then cut it once I could clear the curb. There was absolutely nobody behind me, so I was accelerating, which is why it was such a bad hit. My friend and I checked the back of my car and there were some bad scratches but no dents. The lamp was destroyed and is now hanging down from the pole and needs to be fixed. My friend eventually let me go and told me he'd let me know about the cost of the pole. I drove the car home and it seemed to drive fine but I am still worried about the way it will drive from here on out. So do you guys think the car will drive okay or should I expect to have trouble driving it in the next few days? Since it was a nice night there were neighbors sitting on their balconies and they were startled at the crash. So not only am I worried about the car, but also at what an idiot I am for crashing into a lamppost while reversing at high speed. I just didn't look behind me often enough and went too far back. I was only reversing with my foot on the gas pedal because I knew there was nothing behind me besides grass and the lamppost. If it helps I was going between 5 and 10 mph, and the crash was LOUD. And I meant I broke the lamppost, not the car.

Why is your friend reporting you? How else would they know it was you if he just keeps his mouth shut. It's a freakin apartment building, not an owner-occupied condo complex.

Umm, because the OP is liable and there were witnesses and hopefully the OP has liability insurance.

I'm thinking you would have been better off to have had a couple cups of coffee before you left...

My friend isn't reporting me, but he is talking to the landlord about the pole as if he crashed into it, then he's gonna let me know the cost.
