Keep the car. If you maintain it, you can run it for a long, long, time, well into 6 digit mileage. The Civic is a pretty sound vehicle. We ran a MY2000 one for 13k years for over 130K miles, and traded it in on an 2012 model (while good as a daily driver, has a cheaper-looking interior due to decontenting).
Ask around for recommendations for an indie mechanic in your area if you like.
Your car is not too old to change. If you regularly maintain it, it will be with you for more than 10 years. It is always better to visit dealers for service and repair. As you are considering your car being lucky to you, as such the best option is to retain your vehicle with you for longer time.
So for the past 5 years I have been driving a 2010 Honda Civic. It has 77,000 miles on it and I drive about 50 miles a day. It was actually a gift (lucky me, right?) but it's been starting to have some issues lately and it seems like everytime I bring it into the dealership, I get charged a few hundred for little things. I don't know anything about cars so I'm sure I could take it elsewhere, but I trust the dealership. I've been thinking recently about getting something new like a Mazda 3 or Subaru. I don't have a ton of money for something but I'm just wondering what people's opinions are RE: buying new or having to make repairs.
Not sure what problems you are having with this car but Civics are considered to be very reliable cars that can easily achieve 300K miles if properly maintained. Ask some of your neighbors or workmates to suggest a reliable private mechanic as dealers are notorious for charging people for unnecessary repairs or charging the highest prices for needed repairs.
These repairs you are alluding to are probably happening very infrequently on a Civic, whereas new car payments will be $200-$300 every month for 5 years.
