So for the past 5 years I have been driving a 2010 Honda Civic. It has 77,000 miles on it and I drive about 50 miles a day. It was actually a gift (lucky me, right?) but it's been starting to have some issues lately and it seems like everytime I bring it into the dealership, I get charged a few hundred for little things. I don't know anything about cars so I'm sure I could take it elsewhere, but I trust the dealership. I've been thinking recently about getting something new like a Mazda 3 or Subaru. I don't have a ton of money for something but I'm just wondering what people's opinions are RE: buying new or having to make repairs.

There's no way repairs on a 77k mile Honda are more expensive than a new car payment.

Then stop taking it to the dealership.

The dealership will always find a few hundred dollars in "necessary" repairs any time you take it there.

I would ask a few friends (if they are car guys) about what is needed. Better yet find a local import tuner shop and take it there. A Honda with 77k on it should be really reliable. What you need is a honest mechanic. Dealer service writers get paid by writing service orders and pushing services.

What were these issues and what were these little things?

I had a 2009 civic that I traded in this summer. My only issues after 85K miles: driver side wind shield wiper joint started rusting 4 years into ownership (salted Canadian winter parked in a heated garage), the same reverse light bulb burnt out twice and none of the others, rear parking brake had trouble disengaging right before the trade-in (I rarely used it and never serviced it, which isn't good for parts like these). Solid car, could still go on for a long long time no doubt.

A Honda that is five years old with under 100k miles is practically new. Find a independent shop and have them do a thorough inspection and do the repairs needed. That car should last at least 15 to 20 years and well over 250k.

I just bought a 2005 C-5 Corvette with 60 k miles and immediately had $2,500 in deferred maintenance done. I will store the car to avoid exposing it to salt and I expect the car to last a very long time.

Jamberry, you asked a question - to keep or to trade.
Will be very useful if you provided us with a description of what exactly those "little things" are?
Also, as everyone else said. Dealership Dairy Queen customers. Milk them for sometimes useless, sometimes unnecessary jobs. They feed on owners ignorance.
That's why my inlaw takes his Corolla to dealership for free oil change, they hand me usually around $500 estimate for this and that, then he takes her back to me, I check estimate with reality, and most of the time we do nothing. Or, I do what REALLY needs to be done.
