Cars still come with spark plugs? I don't touch anything under that lovely massive hunk of plastic covering my engine and everything around it. It's not worth the hassle. That's what the dealership is for. The vehicle even has 2 batteries and one is not under the hood.......not a vehicle I feel like messing with.

You might want to change them out. They don't last that long. Your fuel economy is probably in the gutter.

Coworker has an 2003 Acura with 375K miles on it. Still runs quite well and we are all hoping he can hit 400K miles or more on it. Anyway, he never changed the plugs. Around 300K miles, he noticed light misfiring that continued to 320K miles or so. Eventually the entire car was misfiring so badly the CEL was blinking and the engine shook. Pulled the codes, and misfire on all 6 cylinders. After a few questions, I suggested he replace the plugs.

He brought them in the next day. Ground straps were pretty much gone and even the electrode tip was gone. How the car ran, i'll never know.

His comment was the engine never ran so smoothly and his increase in fuel economy was drastically noticeable.

My point being...Spark plugs are a consumable. They will wear.

I wouldn't say that. I sent my car to the dealer under warranty with a brake issue. Explained the problem, and figured they would fix it in a couple hours.

Nope, got the car back and they said everything was normal.

I disagreed and pulled my own wheels off and found one of my rear caliper pistons was seized. Bought a caliper and replaced it on my own. Dealership never saw my car again after that.

I have a 03' Legacy Wagon, because it's a flat-4 engine, the spark plug locations are horizontally situated on each side of the car with lots of hoses and getting the battery and airbox out of the way makes the job easier.

Most spark plugs are only good for 80k before they start wearing out. Because you have a Tacoma V8, you have 8 cylinder doing the work than just 4 or 6. If you had a misfire for a long time without knowing, you risk cylinder damage in the long run which can lead to expensive engine repairs. It's not worth it for $8-11 a spark plug.
