I had a 5 speed 2002 Jetta 1.8t fully loaded. I loved that car up until 1600 miles when it started falling apart. We had it for 2 years and finally gave up. VW bought it back from us (without having to go through arbitration) paying most of what we paid for it back to us. The loan was taken care of so we were lucky, as I have heard horror stories to the contrary.
That being said, I truly loved driving it, miss the turbo whine and would have kept it forever if it had lasted.
A word of caution though... we asked what would happen to the car and were told it would be given a clean title and sent off to a dealership in the midwest.

The only reason I'm not driving one now is because I needed a car ASAP and didn't find what I wanted in a VW. People ask me how I like my Mazda 3, and I say:

"It's a great car, but it's not a VW."

I had a Passat that had problems so I traded it for a new Mazda 3. I agree with your sentiment, it was a very nice car but just not a VW.

I ended up trading the Mazda 3 for a Jetta 2.0T. I'm satisfied again

My father had a 1981 VW Rabbit diesel he used for his business, and he put close to 300,000 miles on it before the engine finally gave out around 1992 or 1993.

Had I to do it over... I would have purchased the last year of the Volkswagon Fox, Wolfsburg Edition, red with black interior when I was in college. Maybe even 2.

Kept them in a bubble storage for about 10 years then use one as a project car, by building a new frame, drop a 911 engine in it, suspension etc.

Would have cost me about $10 grand back then new. Would have been interesting.

My girlfriend has a 2003/last build year, Cabrio GLS which is loaded, dark blue/orient blue i believe. She doesnt put many miles on it, so I have treated it as a garage queen and it looks brand new. only 30k miles and all steam cleaned under the body, engine etc. Clay and wax monthly etc.

I like volkswagons, but not the new body styles too much. R32 looks fun but the view of the back doesnt appeal to me.

My first was a 1970 Beetle. I bought it with earnings saved from a paper route when I was a kid. Since then I have had ownership of almost to many to list. Currently I drive a 1970 Transporter Bus. I have had it for almost 10 years.
The oldest I have had was a 1960 Camper, and the "newest" was a 1973 Camper.
The old aircooled VW's are not my main vehicle for the family, but I do enjoy them. So easy to maintain, no electronics, no water system, just fuel, air, and 12 volts.
