We used to call that "shaving" and it was done to get rid of the clunkiness that cluttered up the body.
And we called it "leading" in the 50s-60s. (Bondo plastic filler was actually used to fill holes, but before the days of Bondo I understand they actually used lead for filling.) We did it for the same reason -- to eliminate some of the ugly "decorations" on a car.
Yeah, rather than being ashamed of what you own I see it most popular on performance trims hiding what they have for a "sleeper" style. Manufacturers love to throw "turbo" "sport" "limited" "type s/r" etc on.
My 2012 300 srt8 have that sleeper look. The only badge is a somewhat small srt8 on the right trunk lid and that was it. But, with 470 hp and 470 lb-ft of torque in a 6.4 liter hemi, it is anything but a sleeper.
Or worse a license plate frame advertising the dealer. Please, take those off.
Well, especially when it's drilled into the front bumper and you're in a state that doesn't require front tags. Bought a new Grand Cherokee in PA once; all their vehicles had front license plate holders with the dealership name and a dealership insert. Told the salesman I wanted it off; he said, "Don't you want to put an Eagles plate on?". I said noooo, and I wouldn't take the car until they promised to take it off and have the holes filled in by a body shop.
I don't care about the badges but I won't accept a car with a dealership logo on it anywhere. My favorite car badge was the '94 Acura Legend, with L E G E N D spaced out across the trunk lid. I thought that looked so cool.

I'm living in FL now and many of the cars have tint so dark you can't see who's driving, and I mean these are cars that my elderly neighbors are driving so it's not like they are pimp-mobiles. Why isn't that illegal for the front side windows? (asked because I notice you're in FL)
Dealership badges or logo are the first thing to go when I buy a car. They just takes away from the looks of the car, and can be pretty tacky looking as well.
1. Had a POS 81 Ford F150. Someone stole the plastic "F150" badge off the side of the truck. Only drove that POS for a year.
So you kept the "POS" badge? Good idea.
