I am looking to buy a compact SUV, along the lines of a RAV4, Escape, CRV, etc. Before I waste my time getting into sardine cans for a test drive, I'm wondering if some of you taller guys (I'm 6'2") can advise me which of these models would give me a sufficient amount of leg room.
I recently drove an Explorer as a rental and it gave me plenty of room, but I don't really need anything that size.
6'7" here. It's not quite a compact SUV, but take a look at the Scion xB. I had a 2009 model that I drove for years. No complaints. Basically the same cargo room as the compact SUV, but sits lower to the ground (handles better).
I'm 6'7 and my wife has a 2009 Rav4. I technically fit in it but on long drives it is not comfortable as my right knee is pinned against the center console.
Hatchbacks generally have more leg room than the compact SUVs I've found. Allows your legs to be more outstretched rather than sitting up straight like in the SUVs.
It's not compact and it's more of a lifted station Legacy wagon but look at the Outback. Tons of headroom even with a sunroof. Plenty of legroom. There is a real back seat a 6 foot guy can fit in when a 6-footer is driving. Some people complain about the center console bumping their right shin/knee. I have the 6-cylinder. I really like it.
You can not look at head room only. To be comfortable, driver has to have plenty of head room>shoulder room>elbow room>knee room>leg room. All those are different parameters and very subjective. Also, it depends on how long a trip driver does in one run. As then we want to get relaxed, knees rotate out to the sides, arms start looking for some support and that exactly when your knees hit door handle or center console. I do long hauls, I stay away from anything that has center consoles and inward protruding door parts.
OP, you will not find anything comfortable in what you mentioned. For long trips. For short ones, if you want to sit real stiff and legs together, yeah, some will do.
You need to take long term test drive, couple hours, so that you do not hate car after purchase. Period. Do not do short trips.
I'm 6'2 and I can drive my other half's CX-5 just fine. The only one I had a real hard time driving was the new Rogue. Just couldn't get the seat back far enough.
Yeah for starters a great thing to do is to go to a car show and just sit in a whole bunch of cars back to back.
