My daughter needs a car for work/school and my wife could use it sometimes as well. We can't afford a third car, but a friend is getting rid of a '98 Chevy Cavalier with 120K miles on it and they offered to give it to us for free. It just passed Virginia's inspection in October. It would be used locally only. We can probably afford the occasional repair, but nothing serious. Should we take it? Just wondering what you guys think. I'm thinking about going for it.

Why not take it? If it craps out, then get rid of it or even sell it down the road.

I would definitely take it, what are you going to find that's cheaper than free?!? That's nice of your friend, he could certainly sell it for something.

Yeah it's worth at least a few hundred for scrap/parts even if it just dies a month later.

Though of course nothing is really free. Additional insurance, registration/tax cost, maintenance etc.

I think I'm okay. Maybe I should see a doctor?

Why not, dkf?

Except for the DMV and insurance expenses plus a few upgrades such as new tires, etc . . . what do you have to lose?

Besides, that era of Chevys were TOUGH and 120k isn't all that bad for a vehicle that age.
