Even the basic pay for E-1 in the military has grown by more than 50% since 1999.

If you're in a position with stagnant pay you need to take charge of your own direction and go back to school or whatever it takes to get into an in demand position. Put in the research and work, not luck.

I was going to say, my pay hasn't increased by the same amount as inflation. I think I'm earning only slightly more than I did 10 years ago.

Inflation has increased, but I believe cars have gotten more expensive in general. A lot of this isn't because of things like Navigation, fancier leather, climate control, etc it's the stuff we don't see. Engine computers, crumple zones, direct injection, NVH measures, etc. The end result is a comparatively better product...at a higher cost.

Have you stopped to consider that your situation is not particularly common or even possible for *everyone else*? You were quite lucky, but don't automatically believe that because it was easy for you it can or will be for anyone else.

Sure, putting myself through night classes in college while working full time(initially at wal-mart at that) was easy.

But it's easier to sit around and complain rather than take charge and make a positive change in your career. No one else is going to do it for you.

It would be difficult to get some of the same features for under $40k. You could do it with a Genesis, but you would not have the same crisp handling, and still be in a mid-size vehicle. The 5-Series, E-Class, and Audi A6 can easily be in the $50k range when equipped with options, but perhaps the closest you could come to a sub $40k price would be the Volvo S60. The S80 is over $40k, and the handling is not as crisp, which can be the issue with the Genesis as well, not that it doesn't cruise nicely, but it's not sporting in nature.

It blows my mind how many of them I see on the road everyday though. My wife and I make good money but would never be willing to afford a car with such a high price tag.
