I don't think a ticket is ever issued. I have gotten a "work order"--that the headlight needs to be replaced in a few days and I had to go back to the police to have it verified. Now when you don't get that done in time, I think a possibility of a ticket or possibly your registration gets cancelled.
My headlight had just went out while leaving my cousin's. I got stopped 40 miles later. Fixed within 24 hours.

This is why I usually carry an extra light bulb in my car. I was stopped once, and thanked the cop for stopping me since it had apparently just gone out (it worked the night before) and told him I had a replacement in the tool box I would install right now. I proceeded to change it right in the parking lot once he said OK.

Here in AZ it's called a 'equipment repair order'. You have so many days to get it fixed and inspected or else you'll get a citation and a fine.

I just had a headlight bulb replaced this week, took the mechanic 5 minutes and he charged me $20.
Theres no reason to drive more than a day or two with a burned out headlight.

Sometimes they are, it's called 'defective equipment' and the cop doesn't have to let you off with just a warning. If he's having a bad day, or you give him a hard time and get him ticked off, he *could* write a ticket with a fine if he *wanted* to.

Most times they won't...unless you give him a reason to...

They can pull you over and ticket you for any exterior light that's out. Even license plate lights.

Very true. And if you fit the profile, they'll stop you for a burned out license plate light. Many a bad guy has been taken off the streets because he didn't make sure all his lights were working.

Pulled over twice in same night two different hick towns. On way to work.
First one wrote a warning/ticket or something. All I did was show the 2nd the paper.
Didn't know that it was out. New Subaru. Still under 1 year bumper to bumper warranty.
But dealer told me that headlight was a "wear" item. No soup for you.
Paid $7.00 for new bulb.

I wish they would ticket people for driving with their fog lights on when they aren't needed.

. . . and WHY NOT, Kluch?

Considering all of the "obstacles and nutcases" out there, why in the world would you even think about driving after dark with insufficient lighting?
