Default Garmin or Magellan portable GPS???? (moved from Dallas, TX forum)

I'm in the market for a GPS for my car.

I've been researching heavy, but wanted to see others opinions on these two products (if you have any)...

I've found a Garmin C340 on a local used site for $175.... I like, and have to have, the text to speech function (where it actually says the road name instead of "turn right in 200 ft").

But I also found a seller that has a brand new Magellen 3250 for $250. Seems like it has more functions, like bluetooth and AAA points of interest, and the most important thing, text to speech.

Does anyone have any experiance in either of these models or brands?

I heavily prefer Garmin and the C340 is the exact unit I recommend to anyone in the market. Garmin has a great system, EXCELLENT support, and has over 6+ million POI's compared to Magellan with much less than that. Type in Garmin C340 comparison on google and you should get quite a few results. I'd go Garmin all the way...

I've been shopping for a GPS and have the same questions, surf2wake.

Here's a great website offering decent prices for both brands . . .

Buy top brand GPS, speakers, phones and other electronics at FactoryOutletStore.com

Keep us updated and good luck!

I ended up w/ the Garmin C340 (it was the original one I had my eyes on in the beginning of my search). Picked it up last night.

So far, so good. I'll be on the road all next week, so I'll be able to give you a better update after using it for a week straight. Check back!

Thanks and don't forget.

I'm still shopping around and seem to be learning more towards the larger 4.3 screens but not sure what other features are more "fluff" than necessary.

I got the Garmin Street Pilot 340 for Christmas. Absolutely amazing. It's so simple, the directions take about a minute to read. It says, "turn right on Walnut St. in 500 yards, then left on Market St..." so you know which lane to get in after the turn. It saves a ton of time finding my way through towns. Highly recommended.

You won't go wrong with Garmin. They are the best in the business. They know how to get and keep customers. Check ebay for Garmin, too.

Good choice on Garmin. I stumbled across the thread too late. I got the Nuvi 650 and love it. It has the 4.3 screen which is great too. An added plus is that Garmin support is in North America. Magellan has their customer service outsourced to India I beleive and I have heard less than positive feedback on the service.

Good point. With repect to magellan units, I am not sure if it has to do with the map build that comes with the GPS units or just that Magellan does not provide Alaska, Hawaii, and Canada. There may be ones for continental US and ones for North America for the Magellan. I know Garmin has different map builds depending on the models you get. My Nuvi 650 came with 2008 North America and when I was in Ontario I had no issues. I know Garmin also sells some lower models that are Continental US only.
