The Spark EV 2LT (highest trim level ) is about $24k retail, and leases out for under $200 a month, because the leasing company gets the tax credits and passes the savings on to the buyer. The Focus EV optioned out is $30k, but with current incentives is $25k before the tax rebates, as well. Lease price on it on the Ford website is under $200 month with money down, but even with zero down is only $230 a month, which is comparable to a lot of cars of it's equipment level. The Volt is about $33k, well optioned, but leases at $269 a month, and you get a lot of car for the money, actually. I'm not wealthy but I can benefit from the tqax credits by leasing (and who wants to own rapidly outdated tech?)

Of course, if you do want to own, you can always buy used. I've seen the 2013 Volts coming off lease at $13-15k and again, you get a lot of car for that money, with almost no fuel bill (I went an average of 3-4 months at a stretch never buying gas and only paying $10-15 a month in electricity)

The instant torque of an EV is addicting. The Spark EV has 325 lb ft of torque and is a hoot to drive. We may be getting one (or the Focus) for my wife ad her daily driver.

And the gas vehicle is more than 12k cheaper. The Spark 1LT per Chevy's website starts at 25k.

Buying an EV is a luxury choice of predominantly wealthy. If your not wealthy and spending 25k on a car that costs 12k your simply a fool.

$13k will buy 5,200 gallons of gas. At 39mpg that is 202000 miles. Good luck on that payback period.

Actually if you are spending about $200 a month on a car that't more fun to drive and not spending on gasoline, you're no rich or a fool at all. Only an insulting, closed minded idiot is the fool.

Spending 200$ a month on what? Worrying about monthly payments is a silly comparison tool used by dealers to get the financially illiterate to buy more car than you can afford.

$13k will buy 5,200 gallons of gas. At 39mpg that is 202000 miles. AT 200k miles the electric is guaranteed to have reduced range and longer charging times, provided proper maintenance the gas engine will still be running. Good luck on that payback period.

When you factor in capitol costs and taxes the payback period is non existent.

price of teslas... if i could get a model S for around 50 i would be in one already. my commute is about 40 miles total a day. outside of that i dont take many trips outside of 120miles round trip, if i did i would plan on charging stations or rent a car or use my wifes gas car. i am hopeful of the model 3 but its to far off into realistically 2018 before they are for sale.

Simply do not want one, unless it's a 70s CitiCar or Comuta-Car. I'll keep my 1991 S10 Blazer daily driver.

This is why electrics should not be subsidized.

"While the median income of Americans hovers under $50,000, the median income of electric car buyers, according to an industry group, was $108,000 in 2012. A 2013 study by Experian found that 21 percent of electric car buyers had an income of over $175,000. Yet these are precisely the people who are getting federal and state breaks and cash rebates to buy alternative fuel vehicles. According to The Los Angeles Times, almost 80 percent of California rebates went to households earning $100,000 or more. Half of those getting rebates for Tesla's $70,000+ sedan earned at least $300,000."

The ugly economics of green vehicles

I don't think the onus is on why not. I think the onus is on why. Why buy a vehicle with limited range, long refuel times, and very little refueling infrastructure when there are vehicles with longer range, almost instant refueling, and are cheaper overall to operate?
