So I'm minding my own business, driving to an appointment on 516 in Savannah, and a black Maserati is in front of me. It is zipping in and out of traffic and the sound it is making (zoom zoom) is pretty neat.
All I know is, I kind of get why anyone would pay whatever that guy paid for that car.
Yes... I was very impressed with the driving feel and sound when I test drove one before buying my E550. The Mercedes, BMW, and most other luxury sedans compete in the same class, but on some levels, the Maserati was in a class of its own. Very exciting car.
Their resale value is atrocious. Can buy one a year old for half off.
Not necessarily Maseratis, but many luxury sports cars depreciate massively. I recall reading about a car that had lost $90,000 in value from new, and it had fewer than 90,000 miles on it. So the cost of depreciation was over $1 a mile.
[I figure that my current daily driver has dropped in value by $16,000 since I bought it new, and it now has 583,000 miles. So that is about 2.7 cents per mile in depreciation costs. It's no Maserati but it's still reasonably fun to drive.]

According to society, having a nice expensive car will give you a higher social status. You'll get attention and attraction of the other sex. It shows off that you have money.
I recall a few years ago the Maserati's exhaust note was the one found most interesting by a female sample group. Here it is. Tongue and check probably.
This thread proves who is and is not a car enthusiast.
