One random Sunday morning on I-20 eastbound. The traffic backed up for miles and we all literally sat in place for an hour. I turned the car off and played on the phone.
Back in the day in July on the way to a Lolapalooza concert. Total standstill. Kinda fun though. Maybe 2 hours? People were getting out of car and fraternizing. This was a new venue and I don't think they were prepared for the traffic. Picked up some hitchhikers. Good times.
Worst had to do as much with my mental state as is did with the 2hr commute that usually took 25 minutes.
It was Good Friday. I was already late the day before by over 2 hours due to road construction. But construction isn't going on on Good Friday right? RIGHT? I mean, all public schools are closed and even the NY Stock Exchange. It was back before checking computer for this kinda stuff.
I was so wrong. And this was just the amunition they needed to fire me over a rejected ADA request that had to do with tardiness.
I-40 west of Albuquerque, a semi hauling Haz-mat sprang a leak, they shut down the road both ways. One guy towing a 5th wheel trailer managed to get to an exit and take a county road. He came to a bridge that was too low and wedged his trailer under it. Eventually a Haz-mat crew got it handled and we went on into Arizona. Don't know what happened to the guy with the 5er.
while i wasnt in it, the worst traffic jam i heard about was in flagstaff, az during the winter. interstate 40 and 17 both were closed for four days while they tried to clear the snow.
think the worst one i was stuck in was in Manchester , got stuck about 17.30 , finally got out of it about 19.00
A friend of the family was taking me to his house to take care of me for a few hours to relieve my parents (I was 10 years old) in the aftermath of the March 1, 1997 tornado outbreak. Due to the rebuilding in a neighborhood where the houses were levelled all the way to the ground, it literally took 2 hours just to get a couple of miles through that region. Walking would have been faster...
Driving back to Dallas from Austin about a decade or so ago, they were doing construction on a stretch of I-35 and it was down to one lane. Apparently, a semi had overturned as well, though thankfully it had happened a while before I got there otherwise it would have taken me even longer to get through. What should have been a 3.5 hr drive was 6.5 hrs.
Blue Water bridge between Port Huron, MI and Sarnia, ONT. Fourth of July. Took over 2.5 hours to get across. Traffic backed up on American side, even before the bridge for about 10 miles.
I've been driving since 2008 and have been fortunate enough to not experience a miserable traffic jam yet. Probably the worst would be when I was driving from Trenton NJ to Manhattan NY, going through the Holland Tunnel...it took about 45 minutes. Before I was driving though we lived in Los Angeles and am sure we hit some hardcore traffic on the infamous 405.
