do not discount the old 200 inline six, it can be made to make decent power, about 250 depending on mods, and surprise people. the added plus is you can still turn on about 25-30 mpg, with an engine that is very hard to kill.

Indeed. I'm a somewhat younger Gen X'er and I remember the 5.0 badges being like a sacred symbol demanding obeisance from all. Not one of my friends in a modded Prelude, Integra, etc. would even bother trying to beat one.

I bought this new back in '92 or '93 cant remember. I had the Gt a few years before this car. The trick to these cars were the rear axle ratio. Ordering one there was 5 or 6 different ratios you could get if I remember right. My GT had a ridiculously high end gear. I had it it up to 140 and it was still going. I let off. started to feel loose at that speed. I liked the look of the LX, a sleeper so to speak. The LX with a 5 spd, and I put in a 3.55 gear. WOW! what a difference. That was a quick car for being stock with nothing but a different gear.
I also has put wider tires on the back, as wide as I could get on the stock rims. Went on the back roads here in NC to try it out.After a few tries. I had to air down, nothing but wheel spin. I aired down the back tires a little for more bite. With the 3.55 gear, leaving hard you had to go right to second. I remember I had my checkbook up under the right visor. I left hard, and it was biting, the front end came way up, seemed like it was off the ground,I know it wasnt, but the front came up quit a bit as It left. The check book shot straight back, over the passenger front seat, over the back seat and landed, or shall I say hit the back of the back cargo area.
Not sure which one it was, but one of the mustangs I had, had a 85 mph speedometer in it. That was just nuts to me, for a car like this. I put in a 160 speedometer, and changed the little speedo gear for a correct speed reading.
I sold it after a few years or so. It was a second vehicle. The guy that came and looked at it, came from about 150 miles away to look at the car. His dad drove him to took at my car. He finally bought it, He said mine was the 4th or 5th he had looked at. Most he had looked at were just completely run to death and worn out.

79-82/83-84/85-86/87-93 are foxbody, fox chassis othewise includes 94-04 aka Fox4 cars- the sn-95 bodystyle.

Fox chassis is slightly based off rhe audi fox platform, and started with the Fairmont/granada in 78. The only cars not on the chassis were the fullsized 2&4 door sedans.

Those Fox Mustangs were the 1932 Ford of a younger generation. Simple, inexpensive, lots of aftermarket parts to build them with, and powerful.

I wanted one back then, drove buddies cars but never bought one. New ones are 420 HP stock so if I wanted to go pony car, I would just get a new one.

I recall GM 350TPI folk had to install nitrous to have their f-bodies run with the FI 5.0s. the L69 carb 5.0 only had a chance against the earlier carb. 5.0s. Took the LT1 introduction in 1992 to make a difference and the Fox 5.0 only had two more years to go in production.

We ragged on cars then as new kids do now to the more expensive and quicker ones. No wonder unmodified performance cars are hard to find 10-20 years later. Unless it is a Corvette.

Any car will be hard to find 10-20 yrs later in like new condition.......cars are meant to be used, no too many folks want to make payments on a new car while it sits in the garage and they drive the old beater to work!

Unless it is a Corvette. Young fellows are finding immaculate C5s/Z06s. Of course, I wrote unmodified not what you wrote.
