I LOVE THIS PIC!!! I want the sticker from the windshield!!! I wish I could find one to put on my car.

Don't they also make signs that you can flash people while driving. I would love to have those, but would be scared to flash the wrong person. In this day and age, there are so many lunatics out there, you flash the wrong sign and they could run you into a ditch .

No I was not taught in drivers ed that the left lane is the passing lane because that is not the law where I live. We pass on the right also in North Carolina. Until my brother came home from MA I didn't even know there were states where you could not pass on the right. Don't expect the laws for the state that you move to to be the same as the laws in the state that you lived before. Some 4 lane roads have slower traffic keep right, but others do not. I hope I never live in a state where you cannot pass on the right, giving much too much power to the driver who drives in the left lane. When we were in California, they were passing in all 8 lanes. You just have to make sure the lane you are changing to is empty enough for you to move to it safely. Makes sense to me.

People driving under the speed limit.... dear God!!!!
Why don't you tell that to the lady that got killed making sure she left the light on time in order to make sure she did not slow down traffic. I would not have been killed because I wait until I know the people going in the other direction are stopping. Lots of people run red lights and I don't want to be a victim. Blow your horn all you want to, but I am going to wait until it is safe to leave the light.

I think this is a city, country thing that is never going to be solved. The people in the country will keep driving safely and the city people will keep crashing into each other trying to get there fast. The thing that really slows down traffic the most is a wreck, so don't follow too close anywhere.

simple.. left lane hogs get a very VERY brief flash of headlights as i'm approaching, as a courtesy, and then i allow myself to get close. if they can safely move over, i'll ride their rear bumper for the count of ten, then pass on the right.

no honking, no brights in the mirror, no swerving. works fine for me.

they should still move though.

I KNOW!

I see signs all along WA and pass multiple patrol officers who just do nothing.

I debate becoming a WASP just to give people tickets for this. I can just imagine WA's revenue increasing with tickets being given for this.

Its not about whether or not someone's being safe. its about the people who are just being SLOW. I too check to make sure traffic is slowing/stopping, but you can see them slow down before their light even turns red. Then theres that pause before yours turns green.

Also, its pretty easy to figure out the cycles. Learn them, and then you can even direct your attention to the specific area that you're likely to have somone come flying from.

Eh, I would have some sympathy for those complaining about the left lane hoggers, but the piece of the puzzle that's missing on this discussion is the presumption that everybody is abiding by the speed limit. That's just not true. If you are driving below the speed limit you should stay in the right lane, but if you're the one hauling the mail at 10-20+ above the speed limit and expect the "slow poke", driving right at the speed limit no less, to move over and roll the red carpet for ya and shower you with rose petals as you swing by, then you're just nuts. Now, in reality all traffic is nominally driving above the speed limit anyways, but I sense it's the 85MPH steady all the way crowd that's whining about the left lane thing, in which case, I'm more than happy to witness the tantrum as I sit idly in the right lane observing your circus act, free entertainment on long drives.

Problem is, for most states where left-lane hogging is illegal, so is passing on the right....

It's almost impossible to maintain lane discipline where there are more than two lanes of traffic in each direction, though if you're puttering along in the far left lane at 10MPH below the general flow of traffic, fellow drivers should be permitted to NASCAR-nudge your ass into the median.

But where there are only two lanes in each direction, there is no excuse for ambiguity. Whereas you hope to never live in a place where you cannot pass on the right, I can't stand living in a place where lane discipline is not enforced. The way to reduce the power of left-lane hogs is not to allow passing on the right, but to actually pull them over and give them tickets. In much of Europe, left-lane hogs (and right-lane passers for that matter) are ticketed with impunity. I don't like the fact that, either by absence in the statute or absence of enforcement, there is no set expectations or uniform, predictable passing behavior between parties who are piloting 4,000 pound chunks of steel at 70+ miles per hour a few feet apart.

(NOTE: above rant applies to limited-access highways only, or those with intersections miles apart.)
