I'm told it's not an unusual price because often the dashboard does have to be removed. Is there a temp quick fix? The car's an 2003 Focus with 210k miles. If I can get thru this summer I'll probably sell it by next summer.

No, this is one of those cases where you have to consider the value of the car, and whether with that many miles it's worth spending more than it's worth for a repair that is strictly for comfort. The money could be better spent on the down payment for a replacement. If you need to wait until next summer, opening the windows may be the more appropriate option. You would not be at all happy if you spent the $1,000 and a few weeks later the engine or transmission went.

That's the $64,000 question. Thanks.

Sadly enough, $1000 seems right on par for a replacement AC evaporator. Factor in parts cost and 80 - $100 labor per hour, and you're there real quick.

If its your first time doing it takes a while but if you have done it before it is a 2 hour job and not hard.Just a lot of screws to remove.

I did one a month ago for a customer and charged them $600 and thought it was too much. Personally I think $1000 is way too much but that seems to be the going rate.

Shop around. If you already know the problem you're simply shopping price. I had a heater core go bad. Dealer wanted 900. Local shop wanted 700. DIY 6 hours and 40 bucks.

I recently had a AC compressor replaced. Knew the issue because the clutch was smoking. Got quotes from 600-1200 bucks. Local AC shop did it for $600.

On a beater like that, just roll down the windows. CT summers shouldn't be that bad.

Drive between midnight and 10 AM. If you must drive in the heat, drive naked.

You gathered from the post that it's only a 2 hour job?
