I have an 03 4.8 Yukon 2wd that shot the pinion out of the housing. Horrible noise rear end grease spewed truck stalled. Cranked up and drove it 1/4 mile to work clunking from the rear end of course. Shop picked it up and hauled it in. Told me the pinion gear had shot thru the housing and would be cheaper to replace the whole rear end than to replace axles gears and new housing. Okay I went for the salvaged rear end from 04 Tahoe. $1180 quote.
They did the work and took it for a road test and the salvaged rear end locked up and trashed my tranny. Told me they had another rear end not a prob. But it was gonna be $2500 for the new tranny. Then asked me if I was having transmission problems before the rear end exploded. I told them, "no of course not".
They installed the new rear end. I told them I would have the tranny work done some place else because I couldn't afford $2500 to have them do it. So I trailered it home. I got to looking at the rear end and it is totally New set up. I had 5 link coil and this one has a huge swing arm type bracket and huge shock. No gm stamp so I could look up the gear ratio cause it looks beafier like it came out of a 4wd.
question 1. Is it even possible for the rear end to trash a tranny ? It has only 1st and reverse. Something happened to it when they had it cause I drove it on to work and parked it when the original injury happened.
Question 2. Do I need to make them fix tranny since it broke during their road test?
Question 3. I had 3.42 gears with 4L60 e and 4.8L engine...do I need to know what the gear ratio is before I get a new tranny or does that matter. The shop told me it came out of an 02 suburban.
Please I will value any input. Thanks...

How many miles on it? When an automatic is stopped at a red light, at low RPMs the Transmis still in gear but is made to handle that. When you do a burnout my revving it up with the brakes on, then suddenly letting off the brake, it's causing abnormal wear to the trans. As long as you don't do it frequently it's not a big deal. In your case, if that trans already had 100k or more wear on it, the rear end locking up suddenly at speed on the road test could have done it in. I suggest a trusted, well rated transmission specialist shop. They will probably have to remove and tear it down to tell, but if they are willing to put it in writing you could try to get the $ in small claims court. I wouldn't trust that first shop to do anything again. BTW, $2,500 seems really low to rebuild that trans, I would expect it to be more like $3,400. Maybe some guilt brought down their price or they would throw in one from a wrecker.

Thank u for your response. They were not wanting to rebuild that was the quote for new one installed. I honestly thought they were trying to sell me the tranny that went with the rear end. The truck has 109k. I never had any problems with this vehical at all til this. I guess since I never had any major or minor problems and only owner this is just a hiccup. I didn't want them to I install it because I could get the one in it rebuilt for $725 my other half can remove/install it. But now I am curious about what the rear end is in it since I can't find the gm stamp.
The shop left ABS unhooked the bolts had not been tightened down nor did they put rear end grease in it. It was a nightmare. They seemed a little put out when o showed up with the payment and the trailer. I told them ahead of time that's what the plan was.
Do you think pursuing the small claims is worth the headache? Thank u again!

That depends on the cost for the transmission. For $725 I wouldn't bother with that headache. For $2000+ I would.

Ahm, did you get rear end with gear ratio matching trannie? One thing to remember about GM - and Ford - products is that EVERYTHING is VIN specific and EVERYTHING has to match or, in best case, it won't work or, in worst case, something gets broken. From my Silverado times and several GM truck forums, that was continuous PITA with parts swaps. Don't work, don't work, broke, don't work....
Be grateful you do not have 4WD. With transfer case in it. Another several grand to replace.

I can't imagine how a locked up rear diff can cause a tranny to fail. The transmission should just go immediately into "coast" mode; the same thing it would do if you pull the emergency brake, locking up the rear tires while in gear and moving down the road. It should just unlock the torque converter, letting the transmission, engine, and wheels spin independently of each other.

Unless I'm missing something, if the transmission worked before all this, THEY are at fault, not you. A locked up rear end will not kill a transmission, especially not in a 2WD truck. If you only have 1st and reverse, it sounds more like they forgot to plug in a transmission speed sensor - input and/or output shaft, speed sensor at the differential, or they just plain broke the sensors/wires and didn't repair it. The other possibility is that they swapped in a differential with seriously steep gearing, like 5:1 or something.

Example: Some transmissions shift points are controlled by wheel speed instead of engine speed. If you are already at redline in 1st gear but only moving 10mph, it might hold it until it reaches its preset shift at 15-20 mph, which will be impossible to reach in 1st gear with such a steep gear ratio.

I don't understand how a pinion can get "shot" out of a differential housing.
