Go to a used car lot in your area...you'll see that KIA'S are also always the cheapest.
Generic statement is generic. At my used lot, old Fords are the cheapest. There's also an old Mercedes and a few Hondas for about $2K each. What does that tell me about those three brands? Oh yeah: absolutely nothing.

Like I said, Kia's renaissance is fairly recent. Think 2010+. This is when they really started to up their game. So yes, older ones are hit and miss. Newer ones look a lot better and have higher reliability, etc. I see many newer Kia's on the road today than most other makes.
You need to change your old biases. Even most domestics are built on par with other manufacturers. I wouldn't hesitate to cross shop GM or Ford
Daewoo. My brother had a Daewoo Nubira. Not only were they horrendously weird looking, but at less than five years old, the car developed some strange electrical issues. The window motors went bad and wouldn't go down, the timing belt broke prematurely and required an expensive cylinder head repair, and you could tell the car was just cheaply made. However, it did have comfortable seats and an OK stereo from what I can remember. And, surprisingly, it was much nicer than the Dodge Neon a girlfriend of mine, at the time, was driving.
We had an A4 Quattro. Bought it brand new. Needed $14,000 in repairs before it even hit 50K miles. Luckily, all were covered under warranty. Got rid of it as soon as the warranty ran out, at which time the check engine light was on due to it needing a $5000 transmission.
The scariest part is that the dealership didn't seem to think any of that was unusual.
