Default The Yaris And The Corolla

I thought that Toyota was going to replace the Corolla when they came out with the Yaris. I guess not. SO the question is why they are selling essentially 2 competing models of compacts? Doesn't make alot of sense to me.

They are not really in competition with each other, and the Yaris was never intended to replace the Corolla but to slot into the market segment under it. The Yaris was brought here to compete in the subcompact segment that the Corolla used to slot in. The Corolla has since substantially outgrown its subcompact roots and now slots into the market segment originally served by the Camry. If you put the Yaris and Corolla side by side, you'll find the Corolla is quite a bit bigger.

Yaris replaced the Toyota Echo in the subcompact market, which essentially replaced the Toyota Tercel back in the day.

Corolla has always been the second-smallest Toyota model, with the Yaris/Echo/Tercel going for budget small-car buyers.
