Deer Nuttz - the point is that someone is NOT going to hear a signal from 75 miles away RIGHT THEN, but that instead the information itself can be relayed by multiple people that are talking about a certain event [bears, accident, etc.] that may be such a distance from you. Does that help?

Deez Nuttz, as you drive down the highway, you will hear from truckers that are going the opposite direction as they pass within sight or as close as 1 mile from you in either direction. They will tell you about a cop they saw 75 miles ago. (Some truckers will even rattle off the "yard sticks" of every cop they've seen since they started driving that day... That's WAAAY more effort than I want to exert!)

Ground wave conditions, skip and living like I now do, in an area where there are Few CB'ers will allow 75 miles without "illegally" modded radios.

I live near Lake Superior in Northern Michigan and we use the CB like a telephone here. Or like a business radio. Cell phones are dubious in there inability to get coverage here in a National forest area so the CB is crucial here.

Nightly I either listen to conversations well over 50 miles away and sometimes 80 miles away, and sometimes talk to them. Obviously the ground wave conditions need to be good for this.

We don't have the welfare CBers here like in the cities like where I came from (Detroit). So CB here is rather nice, and if theres any complaint I have there might be a lack of CBers that just enjoy conversations..

Of course, by that time the information is incredibly stale and useless, and I think that was Crew Chief's point.

Anyway, CBs are still somewhat helpful for sniffing out bears. Cops are getting more and more creative with disguising their patrol vehicles, and it sometimes takes experienced truckers to sniff them out. That said, a CB is a supplement to, not a substitute for, a high-quality radar detector. And yes, it can help stave boredom by either providing chances to chat with fellow travelers or providing for some colorful people-watching opportunities (or "people-listening" as the case may be). For a city lad like me, it's also a fascinating study in cultural habits/differences.

Oh, how terrible for you. Here's a surprise: Heteros aren't the only ones allowed to appropriate words, like fa**ot for example. "Gay" used to only mean "happy". So what. Get over it.
