It stinks when you put a good amount of money into a car & it totally breaks down on you.Wrecking yards are not giving much yet they sure are making enough off the car.Sometimes its best just to get a non op & part out car yourself. The wrecking yard offered me $150.00 for my car yet my tires alone are worth $200.00 (75% tread left).
I had the same situation with a 96 Acura RL that I got 251k out of before the engine went. Too many things wrong to fix. I rolled it into the garage and took off as many parts as I could. It was fun. Sold the parts as used (priced at 1/5 the the dealer cost for new parts) on ebay, craigslist, and the acura forums sites. Built a page for the car. The carcass of the car went to the crusher.
So far I have sold $2500 worth of parts and netted $2100 after fees and shipping.... Still have about half the parts left...
I just did the same thing. Put $600 in parts into my truck and the engine apparently siezed up. I was told that you generally get $25 for a scrap not runnig car. Craigs list might be a good idea, or donating it.
If you take a whole vehicle to the scrapyard, you won't get much more than 200 bucks(on a good day). What I did was cut off the converter( worth 70 bucks alone) . The yard charges, or deducts rather if it has tires, seats ,dashes ect.,because they aren't in the plastics business. Remove anything that isn't metal. And scrap the engine ,transmission, and battery. And separate aluminum from steel and iron because it pays much more. Then take all the "pieces up there and you'll double your money for about a days work.
Can someone tell me the number to California vehicle retirement program????
